Set during the Babylonian exile, this psalm mourns what was left behind in the homeland. The refrain, inspired by the traditional song, echoes the request that God remember those who grieve and those whose wounds have not yet been healed.
Psalm 137 By the Waters of Babylon

Tune: Emigrant’s Farewell
Words: Kiran Young Wimberly © 2018
Lord, remember me….
By the waters of Babylon
Where we sat down, and where we wept
On the willows there we hung our harps
And our captors said, “Sing us a song”
Don’t forget, Lord, how I grieve
For my heart has wounds that have not been healed
My hand and heart I will give to thee
So do not forget; Lord, remember me
How can I sing in a foreign land
How can I forget Jerusalem
My greatest joy and my delight
Never will I sing your songs again
Don’t forget, Lord, how I grieve
For my heart has wounds that have not been healed
My hand and heart I will give to thee
So do not forget; Lord, remember me
I remember the day of Jerusalem’s fall
How they cried, “Tear it down
Tear it down to the ground!”
I cannot forget all that I have lost
Take away the grief that fills my thoughts
Don’t forget, Lord, how I grieve
For my heart has wounds that have not been healed
My hand and heart I will give to thee
So do not forget; Lord, remember me
